Sort Order

Description

There are plenty of attractions children will love in the area that are fun for the whole family. A couple favorites include the International Spy Museum and the O. Orkin Insect Zoo.

Sports fans can catch a Game or Concert at Nationals Park. South of the Capitol and located along the Anacostia River in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, this ballpark is a LEED-certified (green) building, the first of its kind in the country. Grab a hot dog, settle in for a spectacular sunset, and hope for plenty of home runs.

What’s more American than football? Snag tickets to a game at Fedex Field and see the  Washington Commanders in action. This stadium is also a great place to catch a concert.

Take a trip to Georgetown Cupcake, a feast for the senses. The dessert destination is well known not only in the city but also across the U.S. Opened by two sisters in 2008, what began as a tiny Georgetown outpost has since exploded into a global brand, with stores across the country, bestselling books, and even a TV show. While in the area, you may also want to order ahead at Call Your Mother Deli, a neighborhood bagel shop inside the old Greenworks Florist space. With a bright pink exterior, you can’t miss it. Call Your Mother has delicious bagel sandwiches, schmears, and donuts to go. It’s even rumored to be a presidential favorite. If you happen to stay at Yours Truly, CYM has an outpost inside the hotel that’s open 7 am to 4 pm daily.

Where to Stay
On Capitol Hill, the Kimpton George is a beautiful stay for any kind of traveler, but really offers the best amenities for parents and families like board game rentals, children’s book rentals, and a complimentary On-Demand Family Fridge Program, which helps guests safely store breast milk during their stay. Equipment rentals for children, safety seats, family friendly dining, and more are also available as part of the Kimpton Kids program. On-site dining is brought to you by the award-winning Bistro Bis, a Parisian-style restaurant and neighborhood favorite.

Nearby Towns/Areas/Attractions
Have a car and looking to explore nearby attractions during your visit? Historic Old Town Alexandria is just a 10-minute drive from the city and is fun for everyone with waterfront views, plenty of shops, places to dine, and even museums like the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Fairfax is another option, about a half hour drive from downtown D.C. With an abundance of parks, lakes, and campsites here, family friendly activities include outdoor adventures like hiking, fishing, kayaking, ziplining, or a visit to the Children’s Science Center

Description

You might not know that many of D.C.’s museums (including Hirshorn, the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Natural History, and more) offer free admission to the public, making D.C. a really budget-friendly city if you’re interested in exploring art and history. Two musts, of course, are the White House (see it and snap a few photos from outside) and the Capitol, where you can join a guided tour to learn about the legislative process and the building’s history.

Affectionately referred to as our nation’s “front yard,” millions of Americans visit the National Mall each year. The expansive grounds are home to dozens of memorials, monuments and museums. Most recognizable are the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. You might even see a movie being filmed here.

Visit the Library of Congress. The impressive grounds are home to three buildings and the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution. It also acts as the research branch of Congress, since it is the largest library in the world. Not only will bookworms be in heaven, the Library of Congress is home to millions of recordings, photographs, maps, and manuscripts.

Grab a bite with a side of White House views at Lady Bird rooftop bar at the Kimpton Banneker Hotel. Catering towards “picky-eaters” in the group, is DC’s newest culinary hub, Western Market, where groups can easily browse merchants offering tasty creations from many backgrounds and find a meal that hits the spot.

A modern market steeped in history, the Western Market food hall is the perfect post-tour stop. With 15+ dining options, there’s something for even the pickiest eaters at Western Market. From Mediterranean and Venezuelan to Pan-African cuisine, you’re sure to leave happy and full after a meal (or a few snacks) here.

Where to Stay
Pet friendly and with on-site parking, the Kimpton Banneker Hotel recently underwent a $20 million renovation, and it also looks out to the White House. Named for a major Black trailblazer, Benjamin Banneker, the hotel features purposeful art installations like a lobby mural by Nigerian-American (and D.C.-based) artist Victor Ekpuk. Make sure to take advantage of complimentary amenities here like loaner bikes, morning coffee and tea service, yoga mats in every room, and a daily hosted wine hour.

Nearby Towns/Area/Attractions
If you have time, take a 15-minute drive from Washington D.C. to College Park. The town is not only home to the University of Maryland but also to attractions like the College Park Aviation Museum, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, and the Jim Henson Statue and Memorial Garden.

Description

Visiting D.C. with your love? Enjoy it through a new lens while still soaking in all the culture the city has to offer. Visit the National Mall at Sunset, or hop on a moonlit monument tour. Pack a picnic and spend some time outdoors lounging at Meridian Hill Park or the Tidal Basin. Why not visit the U.S. Botanic Garden while you’re at it? Wander the Garden which features revolving exhibits, an indoor Conservatory, a gorgeous rose garden, and more. Another really fun and different activity is a moonlit monument tour.

Dine at Mercy Me, a hip South American-inspired spot inside Yours Truly featuring everything from Peruvian and Argentinian dishes to strictly South American wines and signature cocktails with a twist like the Negroni Colada. Want to have a dinner to remember? Rent out the private dining and listening room inside an old vinyl shop (in addition to the main dining area), where you can curate the musical selection for the whole restaurant.

An authentic and Forbes Travel Guide-recommended French brasserie, Cafe Du Parc lives inside The Willard Intercontinental Washington D.C. Since 1997, the restaurant has been paying tribute to French culinary traditions with dishes like seared foie gras and steak frites, but you’ll even find Maryland crab cakes on the menu. Feeling fancy? You’re guaranteed to dine like a delegate here.

Where to Stay
If you’re looking for a really luxe, romantic stay, the Willard Intercontinental Washington D.C. is it. Opened over 200 years ago, making it one of the oldest hotels in the city, the Willard was also recognized as a 2024 Forbes Travel Guide-recommended hotel. The property has welcomed U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries, and various celebrities over the years, so much that it’s commonly known as the “Residence of Presidents.” With timeless elegance and a rich legacy, this historic hotel offers luxurious accommodations in the heart of the city.

Pet friendly and close to Dupont Circle, Yours Truly D.C., A Vignette Collection Hotel offers elevated dining options and elevated comforts for guests. Whether it’s dry cleaning or a last-minute barber you need while on vacation, Yours Truly D.C. has you covered. Traveling with music lovers? Here, you can explore the hotel’s exclusive music library with an in-room record player available upon request.

Nearby Towns/Area/Attractions
30 or so minutes from the city by car, Annapolis oozes charm. Located on Chesapeake Bay, Maryland’s capital city touts historic 18th-century brick homes, waterfront views, boat tours, romantic restaurants, and a real “Main Street” feel.

Description

Hit the shops at Union Station and delight in the architecture of this century-old train station and transportation hub. With dozens of dining options, plus clothing stores, souvenir shops, and more, this is the perfect place to spend a rainy day out and about.

Swing by the Dupont Circle Farmers Market for fresh produce and local goods or head to Chinatown for a diverse range of Asian cuisine. The historic Eastern Market in Capitol Hill is also a great stop for varied food options and baked goods, flowers, cheeses, and crafts.

If you’re traveling for business, chances are you may end up at the Walter E Washington Convention Center, a LEED-certified facility that hosts international policy conferences, industry conventions, fundraisers, festivals, galas, and more. In downtown D.C., you’ll find it’s close to lots of shops, restaurants and bars, and even sporting venues in case you have some extra leisure time to explore the area.

Where to Stay
A hotspot for locals and visitors alike, the Intercontinental Washington D.C. - The Wharf is a place you’ll want to hang around a little longer. With its warm design and many rooms overlooking the Potomac River, these are views you don’t get just anywhere in the city. Head to the seasonal rooftop bar, which of course has water views, too, or book a treatment at The Spa at The Wharf for total relaxation.

Nearby Towns/Areas/Attractions
A five-to-10-minute taxi ride from downtown D.C., a stop in Arlington is a must if you want to see the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery, the most famous cemetery in the country.

Description

Visit historic sites and attractions like the Black Lives Matter Plaza (near the White House), Culture House (an arts & culture venue in a former church walking distance to the Capitol), and The Howard Theatre, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974 and where famed musicians Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerarld, and Billie Holiday once performed.

A classic D.C. institution, Old Ebbitt Grill has been around since 1856. Seafood is the word here, and not just oysters, tinned fish, and from the raw bar, but also oyster drinks. Try a Bloody Maryland or an Oyster Shooter with your meal. Order the mouthwatering chili half-smoke at Ben’s Chili Bowl, a U Street institution and local favorite. Dining meets literature at Busboys and Poets, which is not just a restaurant, but also a bookstore. And Ebenezers Coffeehouse serves up great coffee for a cause in a historic building.

Where to Stay
Located in a historic building with grand period architecture, high ceilings, incredible amenities, and super spacious guest rooms, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Washington DC is in the Penn Quarter near some of the city’s best restaurants, monuments, and more. If it’s comfort and luxury you’re aiming for during your solo getaway, look no further. Befriend fellow travelers by the coffee and tea station, where your morning beverages are always complimentary, or use your stay to really practice some solo self care.

Description

Springtime in Washington, D.C. unveils one of nature's most enchanting displays—the cherry blossoms. Delicate pink and white blossoms transform the capital's Tidal Basin into a floral wonderland that will take your breath away. Prime time to witness this spectacle is typically a short window between the last week of March and the first week of April, though exact timing depends on the weather.

Discovering the District
In 1912, the first cherry tree was planted in Washington D.C. thanks to a woman named Eliza Scidmore, who was a geographer, photographer, author, and world traveler, as well as the first woman to sit on the board of the National Geographic Society. Her travels to Japan led her to propose planting cherry blossom trees in D.C. and it took more than 25 years for this dream to be realized. She and first lady Helen Taft were the only ones present when the first tree was planted. Now, more than 3,000 bloom in D.C. every year.

Description

You don’t need a car to get around Washington D.C. It’s a pedestrian-friendly city, especially around the National Mall and downtown areas. There are also multiple transportation options, in addition to walking, like Metrorail, Metrobus, and the DC Circulator (a bus service connecting popular neighborhoods and attractions). Prefer to explore on two wheels? Rent a bike and get to cruising around the city's most bike-friendly neighborhoods.

Description

Pack for the Weather/ Check the Weather
Washington, D.C. has four distinct seasons, so plan to pack for the weather. In the spring, temperatures range from around 50℉ in March to 75℉. Summer temps climb into the upper 80s in August, cooling to the lower 80s in September and around 50℉ in November. Average highs in the winter reach 48℉ in December and can go below freezing in January and February. In winter you probably won’t be dining outside!

Take a Peek at the Cultural Calendar
Washington, D.C. hosts numerous events throughout the year, including parades and festivals like the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which takes place in March/April. The National Independence Parade marches along Constitution Avenue every July 4, featuring marching bands, patriotic floats, and fireworks displays. The National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in December draws festive crowds, and Capital Pride in June is a family-friendly celebration featuring floats, marchers, and performances.
